Dean Youngblood, a young farm boy and talented skater, has one burning ambition, to play professional ice hockey. No one questions his talents or ability on ice, but hockey is a fierce sport and often violent competition. When Youngblood joins a tough, bruising semi-pro team, he not only has to prove himself in the arena, he also has to learn what he wants in life. Derek Sutton is Youngblood's team-mate and best friend, a battle-scarred veteran of the amateur league on the verge of a career in the pros until he is brutally assaulted by Racki, a bloodthirsty opponent, in the final moments of a critical game. When Racki, the most dangerous player on ice, comes gunning for Youngblood after having disposed of Sutton, Youngblood is challenged to come out 'swinging' or put his career on ice.
