A would-be author, Lance Clayton (Robin Williams) suffers the indignity of the knowledge that the best he will achieve in his career is his job as a poetry teacher in a mundane high school. Plagued by the existence of his rude and uncaring son Kyle (Daryl Sabara), and a frustrating relationship with girlfriend Claire (Alexie Gilmore), Lance is completely fed up with his lot, when his life turns in a completely different direction. An unfortunate accident gives Lance an opportunity to put his writing skills to use, but his unexpected success may be too much for him to cope with when he is reminded of how he achieved it.
