As a child, "Baby" Jane Hudson was the star of her family, and people queued to see her perform on stage - while her sister Blanche was all but ignored. As young women, however, the tables have turned: Blanche is a big Hollywood success, while Jane is an alcoholic who still throws tantrums when she doesn't get her way. But Blanche has sworn to take care of her sister whatever happens, and makes sure it is written into all her contracts that Jane also works. Then one night a fit of jealousy and a suspicious car accident leave Blanche permanently crippled and wheelchair-bound. In their old age, the sisters live together unhappily, Blanche (Joan Crawford) confined to the upstairs level of the house, and Jane (Bette Davis) drinking heavily and maltreating her sister. Blanche plans to sell the house and move out, but she is too scared to tell Jane. When Jane finds out, it tips her over the edge of sanity, and she begins to plot for ways to keep Blanche locked up forever.
