Sobran (Jérémie Renier), a peasant worker who assists the Comte de Vully (Patrice Vulota) in his vineyard, begins to learn the process of winemaking, with a dream to make his own wine one day. He works hard and falls in love with Celeste (Keisha Castle-Hughes), whom he marries and they start a family. One evening, Sobran is stunned when an angel named Xas (Gaspard Ulliel) appears in the vineyard, and promises to help him become a winemaker, but tempers his offer with the caution that the creation of a great wine will involve some measure of suffering. Sobran focuses on making his own wine, but upon the Comte's death, his relative, the Baroness de Valday (Vera Farmiga) requests Sobran's help to continue making wine from the Comte's vines. Sobran finds himself caught between his patron and Celeste, and also to his devotion to creating an outstanding vintage, which, true to Xas' prediction, does not come without a price.
