Veronika (Sarah Michelle Gellar), a young woman with what seems to be a good life, and a fulfilling job, feels that she has no obvious reason to continue living, and organises to end her own life. Frustratingly, she fails in the attempt, and wakes to find herself an inmate of a psychiatric institution. As she talks with Dr Blake (David Thewlis), the psychiatrist in charge, she learns that she has, in fact, ensured her own imminent demise, as her overdose damaged her heart. With this knowledge, Veronika starts to see the world differently, and as a new relationship with a fellow inmate, Edward (Jonathan Tucker) develops, she also starts to see hope for the first time.
