THE SHINING

Genre: Horror
Starring: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall
Rated: MA

When writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) - who has a history of alcoholism and child abuse - takes a job as winter caretaker for the Overlook Hotel, high in the Rocky Mountains, he and his wife (Shelley Duvall) and their psychic young son Danny (Danny Lloyd) will be isolated until spring. Jack is keen to use the isolation to work on his book and laughs off the Manager's grisly story about a previous caretaker who murdered his family one winter. However, Danny immediately has misgivings: his "imaginary friend', who he calls Tony, seems to know something is wrong about the hotel and Danny can see that the head chef, Mr Halloran (Scatman Crothers) (who shares Danny's psychic gift of "shining') is scared of something. Once the first blizzard closes the road out, Jack becomes increasingly alienated from Wendy and Danny, and the accumulated power of evil deeds committed at the hotel begins to drive him mad. Now there may be no escape for his wife and son from the haunting power of madness, memory and family violence.
