Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston) had three children and then they separated. Chas (Ben Stiller) started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) was a playwright and received a Braverman Grant of fifty thousand dollars in the ninth grade. Richie (Luke Wilson) was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. After two decades of family dysfunction, virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums has subsided. Margot is unhappily married to a child psychologist (Bill Murray) and having an affair with her childhood friend Eli (Owen Wilson); Chas is now a widower raising two sons; Richie is reclusive after suffering a mental breakdown during a grand final. However, when their patriarch unexpectedly decides to re-enter their lives, the TenenbaumĂs find themselves under the same roof once again, with very curious results.
