After a night out to celebrate his birthday, George Malley (John Travolta) is amazed to see an unusual light in the night sky. He is further surprised when he begins to experience great waves of knowledge coming into his head, and appears to have developed a hyper-intelligence, which sees him predict an earthquake that occurs soon after. He also finds himself able to move objects with his mind. George tries to pass on the positive information he is receiving, but many people from his small town are unsure what to make of George's changed abilities, and his girlfriend Lace (Kyra Sedgewick), his friend Nate (Forest Whitaker) and his doctor (Robert Duvall) are soon his only supporters. As government interests become curious about George, he learns some devastating news, which puts pressure on him to protect the important data he receives so he can assist the wider world.
