John Cusack and Demi Moore star in this comic adventure about a young man who sets his sights on art school after he misses out on a college basketball scholarship, but his best friend and a crazy young hitchhiker ensure that he has a memorable summer holiday first. After his high school graduation, Hoops McCann (John Cusack) fails to win the basketball scholarship his parents have set their heart on, but he has another plan in mind. Also a talented cartoonist, Hoops has to complete an art project over the summer to apply to art school, but his best friend, George Calamari (Joel Murray), decides that Hoops needs to come with him to Nantucket for a vacation. Enroute, the pair comes across Cassandra (Demi Moore), an outrageous musician who has angered a gang of motorcyclists, and they help her escape their wrath. Once on Nantucket, Hoops and George, and George's friends (Bobcat Goldthwait, Tom Villard and Curtis Armstrong) find themselves caught up in more of Cassandra's problems as she prevent her family's home from being snapped up by a powerful developer, while Hoops falls headlong in love with her.
