When stock market whiz Chris Thorne (Chevy Chase) takes New York attorney Diane Lightston (Demi Moore) and two wealthy, eccentric clients on a Saturday drive to a business seminar, he hopes only to spend a pleasant time scoring romantic points with the lady lawyer. Instead, his detour off the New Jersey Turnpike leads him into a ramshackle, remote village called Valkenvania, where a minor driving infraction lands the unfortunate travellers before ancient, irascible Justice of the Peace Alvin Valkenheiser, who bears a seething grudge against "outsiders" and quickly sentences his terrified traffic offenders to death. Their efforts to escape entail bizarre encounters with the highly unusual residents of Valkenvania and with a carload of rap musicians who have also been sentenced to a similar fate.
