Brian Kessler (David Duchovny) is doing his graduate thesis on serial killers. Yearning for a break, he and his photographer girlfriend Carrie (Michelle Forbes) decide to take a cross-country tour to document famous American murder sites. Their route takes them through Tennessee, Arkansas and Texas, to the homes and murder sites of America’s Most Wanted before they hit their final destination - California. The only problem is they’re a little short on cash and need someone to share the ride. With a landlord ready to toss him out of his trailer, and a parole officer who gets a kick out of sending him on menial job interviews, ex-con Early Grayce (Brad Pitt) is itching for a change. He spots a bulletin board notice that offers the escape he’s been looking for - a shared road trip to sunny California. He and his girlfriend, Adele (Juliette Lewis), head to the local bus depot, to meet up with Brian and Carrie. Though their cross-country voyage begins with Brian behind the wheel, Early Grayce ultimately takes them all on a ride they’ll never forget.
