New South African President Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) works to bring his fragmented nation together after decades of apartheid policy that led to his 27 year imprisonment. When South Africa wins the right to host the 1995 Rugby World Cup, Mandela sees an opportunity to unite the country through sport, but also identifies that the national rugby team, the Springboks, a predominately white team, are perceived as a racist symbol. He meets with the team's captain, Franois Pienaar (Matt Damon) and finds him to be in agreement about using the team to unite black and white citizens through the example of their sportsmanship. The team starts to win over non-white South Africans as they continue to win their matches, and buoyed by their supporters, the "Boks" head towards a major victory on many levels.
