Sean Penn and Dakota Fanning star in this Oscar®-nominated drama which observes the struggle that an intellectually disabled man goes through to secure custody of his intelligent seven year old daughter, with the help of a high powered lawyer.Living a respectable life with a job, a home and a strong network of support around him, Sam (Sean Penn), an intellectually disabled man, finds himself a father after a brief relationship with a homeless woman. His daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning) is the light of his life, and he does everything possible to give her a secure and comfortable upbringing. When she reaches the age of seven, however, it becomes apparent that as she exceeds the mental age of her father, it will prove difficult for Sam to meet all of her needs. Under threat of losing his daughter, Sam finds a lawyer, the driven and focused Rita Harrison (Michelle Pfeiffer), who takes his pro bono case in an effort to further her career, but as she gets to know Sam and Lucy, she discovers that they are perhaps able to help her more than she can help them.
