At Westerberg High you're either a Heather or you're a nobody. Heather Chandler, Heather McNamara and Heather Duke are the coolest of the cool. They set the trends and decide who's in and who's out. Veronica Sawyer is in, she is Heather Chandler's closest friend. Veronica is unhappy, however, and sees the structure imposed on Westerberg by the Heathers as unfair and cruel. She keeps her feelings to herself, until one day she meets a new boy at school, JD. JD is a quiet James Dean type, and Veronica finds herself instantly attracted to him. The attraction is mutual, and Veronica and JD soon get to know each other better over a game of strip croquet. Veronica confides in JD her unhappiness with the Heathers and their cruel caste system, and JD soon comes up with the perfect solution: kill the Heathers and end their tyranny. At first, Veronica thinks JD is joking, but after he mixes Heather Chandler a fatal cocktail, she realizes he's deadly serious. With one Heather out of the way, JD and Veronica find it ever easier to eliminate the school's most popular students, staging mock suicides for each of them. It all becomes too much for Veronica, and she tries to put a stop to the killings, but JD is just getting started. He reveals his plan to blow up the school and kill everyone in it. Veronica stages her own fake suicide, and then sets out to stop JD with her newly acquired anonymity. Veronica races to catch up with him before he can put his terrible plan into action.
