Stanley Phillips (John Cusack) always dreamed of patriotic service, until his military career was cut short because of his poor eyesight. Now, while his wife Grace is fighting in Iraq, he serves customers at a home supply store and cares for their 12-year-old daughter Heidi (Shélan O’Keefe) and her 8-year-old sister Dawn (Gracie Bednarcyzk). Although he is a loving father, Stanley struggles to compensate for the more affectionate role of their mother, who the girls miss deeply. So when he learns of Grace’s death, he can't bear to tell his children the news. To postpone the inevitable, the normally staid father proposes a spontaneous road trip to his girls, and the three set off for the fun of an amusement park called Enchanted Gardens. The further they drive, the closer the three become - but Stanley knows that eventually he must face the inevitable task of changing their lives forever.
