Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale star in this double Oscar®-winning gritty drama which tells the true story of boxer "Irish" Micky Ward and his tumultuous relationship with his half-brother Dicky, a former boxer.As a mildly successful boxer, "Irish" Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) has been close to success several times, but as his ambitious mother and manager Alice (Melissa Leo) continues to push him to fight boxers who are clearly not in the same weight range as him, his defeats keep piling up. His half-brother Dicky (Christian Bale), himself a formerly successful fighter, tries to train Micky but his downward spiral into drugs is not helping. On the verge of walking away from it all, Micky meets Charlene (Amy Adams), a barmaid whose support is timely, but she comes into the firing line from his family when Micky baulks at yet another uneven match. Dicky ends up in jail, and Micky's dad (Jack McGee) guides him back into the ring, pitting two sides of the family against each other, but as success appears on the horizon again, Dicky pulls himself out of the mire to help his brother go all the way.
