Sam Clayton (Vincent D'Onofrio) is a crooked accountant for local crime, who dreams of having his own home and a wife for the lounge room. Then his boss, thug Red (Delroy Lindo), offers him a wife - Freddie (Cameron Diaz). Red wants to punish Freddie for supposedly stealing $10,000 from him, and the worst thing he can think of is making her marry a loser like Sam. On her wedding day, Freddie is mutinous and misbehaving, and takes an instant shine to Sam's estranged younger brother Jjaks (Keanu Reeves). Jjaks is an ex-con, not long out of jail and not far from returning. In fact, he's just on his way back out of town, after seducing Freddie and holding up a gas station, when his mother has a heart attack at the wedding. Freddie is determined to hang on to Jjaks, and persuades him to run away with her to Las Vegas. Against his judgement, but going with his instincts, Jjaks agrees and the two set off on a road trip, with Sam, Red and the cops on their trail.
