Based on a true story, Dog Day Afternoon chronicles the story of two losers who attempt to perform a quick and simple bank robbery and suddenly find themselves in the middle of a media circus where everything goes wrong. Sonny is the mastermind and Sal is the follower, and what was planned as a four minute hold up turns into an eight hour siege. For starters the bank has no money and when the situation escalates, an overwhelming team of police, media and curious onlookers converge on the area. If that was not bad enough, Sonny's lover, Leon, shows up to help talk him out of the bank, however this leads to Sonny revealing that his motive for robbing the bank was in fact to finance Leon's sex change operation.
