Five-year-old Dennis (Mason Gamble) gets himself into unintended strife on a regular basis, much to the dismay of his neighbours as well as his parents. When his parents have to go out of town for business, the only neighbours prepared to look after him are the Wilsons (Joan Plowright and Walter Matthau), despite Dennis being somewhat of a nemesis to Mr Wilson. When a neighbourhood thief (Christopher Lloyd) robs the Wilson's house, Dennis's efforts to be helpful result in a major disaster involving a rare plant that Mr Wilson has been nurturing for his gardening club. After Mr Wilson berates him, Dennis runs away, leading him into a tricky situation with the thief, but the resourceful little menace manages to gain the upper hand. Wherever Dennis (Mason Gamble) goes, mayhem follows. And somehow, most of it seems toland in the lap of his long-suffering next-door neighbour, George Wilson (Walter Matthau). Dennis and his backyard exploits are guaranteed to stir up laughter and warm the heart.
