In early 1930s Berlin, young American singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minelli) is a singer at Berlin’s popular Kit Kat Club. Brian Roberts (Michael York), a British academic, moves into her building. Sally tries to seduce him, but he seems impervious to her charms, and women in general, and Sally wonders whether he is gay. The pair become friends, Brian experiencing Sally’s bohemian lifestyle in the last days of the Weimar Republic. Brian and Sally eventually become lovers. Sally and Brian make friends with a rich German baron (Helmut Griem) who invites them to his country estate. There he proceeds to seduce them both, and Sally and Brian realise upon returning to Berlin that both have slept with him. Later, Sally discovers that she is pregnant, but is unsure who the father is. The pregnancy forces both to make tough decisions about their future.
