During the explosive summer following his graduation from high school, Stony De Coco (Richard Gere) learns his future has already been planned by his well-meaning family. His father and his uncle have plotted a stratagem, but Stony has some unresolved thoughts of his own. Stony's father, Tommy (Tony Lo Bianco) and his uncle, Chubby (Paul Sorvino) pressure him to join in the family tradition of macho men who work with their hands and then relax with women, liquor and fighting. But a series of incidents during the long summer shows Stony that what is best for his elders is not necessarily right for him. Though showered with love at home, Stony agonises over his frustrated mother, Marie (Lelia Goldoni), who terrorises his younger brother, Albert (Michael Hershewe) into illness. His girlfriend, Cheri (Kristine De Bell) is unfaithful. He finds momentary comfort in the amoral arms of a disco waitress, Annette (Marilu Henner). He even tries life his father's way, but finally decides he must set out on his own.
