Angus Macfadyen and Kevin Umbers star in this dramatised tale of the life of the legendary British pirate, Blackbeard, who creates a fearsome reputation as he takes hostages and plunders ships during his search for a hidden treasure trove. From a well-to-do English family, Edward Teach (Angus Macfadyen) becomes a sailor and travels to the Caribbean, where he begins to develop a reputation as a ruthless pirate and renames himself Blackbeard after his fearsome appearance. Always looking to increase his power and malevolent influence, Blackbeard becomes involved in the affairs of Charles Eden (Richard Chamberlain), the governor of St Vincent Island, who requires someone to do his dirty work. Blackbeard sets his sights on the governor's adopted daughter, Charlotte Ormand (Jessica Chastain), but his main focus is Captain Kidd's famed treasure, also sought by many other seafarers, which Blackbeard intends to locate and appropriate before anyone else.
