Milo (Ryan Phillippe) and his friend Teddy graduate from the Stanford University Computer Science department at the top of their class and with a reputation as the hottest young programming team. Immediately they are headhunted by Garry Winston (Tim Robbins), the head of Nurv software conglomerate. Winston is on the verge of launching his most ambitious and lucrative venture yet: Synapse. Synapse will connect all communication hardware on the earth, via satellites. But Winston says he canít do it without Milo. Winstonís offer of money and unlimited creative challenges appeals to Milo but not Teddy, who is cynical about Nurvís history of stifling competition and foisting inferior products on a gullible market. While Teddy sets up his own start-up, Milo moves to the Nurv campus with his girlfriend Alice (Clare Forlani), to begin work on Synapse. But when Teddy is killed on the verge of a breakthrough, and Winston conveniently hands him a coding solution, Milo starts to realise that something is very wrong at Nurv.
