In the bright light of day, the house in Amityville is a beautiful three storey colonial, surrounded by a green, well kept lawn that slopes gently to the bay. However it has a dark history, its previous occupants murdered one night by a family member. The house has stood vacant ever since, which explains why George Lutz (James Brolin) and his wife, Kathleen (Margot Kidder) were able to buy it at a bargain price. The Lutzes and their three children have hardly moved into what was to be their "dream house" when a series of menacing and inexplicable events begin, which cause the family to increasingly doubt their sanity.
